Beginning in 2019, I began work on a new series of oil paintings, where I take the coal-mining imagery and develop the elements slightly differently. The crow and the hands reaching out to them evoke memories of birds on rooftops during rainstorms, my grandfather hunting animals at night on the moorlands of Northumberland, a fallen man in a coalmine reaching up for help.
